OROP implementation : Announcement likely on August 15

OROP implementation : Announcement likely on August 15
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to announce the much awaited One Rank One Pension (OROP) scheme implementation on August 15. Three-million strong ex-servicemen and war widows are to be benefited by this move. The ex-servicemen protesting against the delay in the implementation of the OROP were on a relay hunger strike for the last 57 days. They are planning to step up their protests in case the government do not announce the implementation by August 15.

One Rank One Pension scheme has been a long-standing demand of nearly three-million ex-servicemen and war widows in the country. Implementation of the OROP was one of the major election promises made by Modi. But even more than a year after he assumed power on May 26, 2014, the promise remains unfulfilled.

While visiting Army jawans in Siachen on October 23, 2014, Modi had said, "The promise of OROP has been fulfilled. We want all our defence personnel to live with dignity."

Social activist Anna Hazare, who is an ex-servicemen, has already announced launching an indefinite fast on October 2 in Delhi over the Land Bill and to press for OROP.
