Doctors Assn strike called off after assurance from Govt

Doctors Assn strike called off after assurance from Govt The Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA) has called off the indefinite strike at city’s government hospitals they had threatened from Wednesday.

This comes after the Central government assured their demands for a better pay structure would be processed. The resident doctors had earlier decided to go on strike from June 1.

The strike was deferred till June 8 after Union Health Minister J P Nadda met FORDA doctors and assured them th-eir demands would be looked into. The FORDA had earlier sent a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on their decision to go on an indefinite strike.

The association on Tuesday wrote another letter that the strike has been postponed after a unanimous decision taken by the FORDA members.

“We took the point of patient care while deciding this. So our strike is on hold till the final submission of the empowered committee to Finance Ministry,” read the letter submitted by FORDA on Tuesday.

“There was a meeting with the officials of the Health Department. They have assured us that the demands are being processed. There is no word yet if all the demands would be met,” said Dr Munish Sharma, a FORDA member.

However, they are negotiating with FORDA and the department has sought more time from FORDA to look into the issues raised by us,” added Sharma.

The doctors are unhappy with the recommendations of the Seventh Central Pay Commission. If they are implemented, their non-practising allowance will be reduced from the existing 25% to 20%.

The doctors had demanded that it be increased to 40%. “We have not been assured yet if it would be raised to 40%. There are possibilities that it will be brought back to 25% as before in the recommendations,” said Dr Sharma.

The resident doctors had raised demands for learning resources, night shift and extra duty allowances, filling of posts through the UPSC exam and more seats for post-graduation.
