DoPT orders promotions for over 8000 in cadres of Central Secretariat

This is one of the largest orders of mass promotions in history for the Central Government Employees, as more than 8,000 promotions in three cadres of the Central Secretariat were implemented simultaneously.

Minister of State for Personnel Jitendra Singh is expected to make the announcement on Friday, according to authorities on Thursday.

According to insiders, several of these promotions had become mired in litigation after government personnel launched lawsuits, including against each other.

There are 327 advancements to the position of Director, 1,097 promotions to the position of Deputy Secretary, and 1,472 promotions to the position of Section Officer, all within the Central Secretariat Service.

The number of Central Secretariat Service officers to be promoted is 4,734.

In addition to stenographers, Principal Staff Officers, clerks, and others in Central Secretariat Stenographers' Service and Central Secretariat Clerical Service, the mass promotions include stenographers, Principal Staff Officers, and others.

The Central Secretariat Service is one of the administrative civil services consisting of Group A and Group B positions, serving as the administrative backbone of Central government ministries and agencies. They are selected by the Union Public Service Commission after a competitive examination.

The last time such large-scale promotions were announced was in 2019 when 4,000 personnel across these three services received promotions.

In addition, 157 Principal Staff Officers, 153 Senior Principal Private Secretaries, and 1,208 Principal Private Secretaries have been promoted within the Central Secretariat Stenographers' Service. The total number of promoted officers in the military is 2,966.

There are a total of 8,089 positions up for promotion, with 727 designated for Scheduled Castes and 207 for Scheduled Tribes. There are up to 5,032 unreserved positions.
