Staff Side demands immediate constitution of 8th Pay Commission

Staff Side demands immediate constitution of 8th Pay Commission

A few days after the Finance Ministry stated there is no proposal to set up the 8th Central Pay Commission, the National Council (Staff Side) Joint Consultative Machinery (NC JCM) wrote to the Union Cabinet Secretary, asking for its “immediate” formation.

In a letter dated December 3, the Staff Side of NC JCM mentioned that it has been 9 years since the 7th Pay Commission's recommendations were implemented, and the next pay and pension revision is due from January 1, 2026.

Shiva Gopal Mishra, Secretary of NC JCM, highlighted in the letter that since the 4th Pay Commission in 1986, a 10-year cycle for revising pay, allowances, pensions, and other benefits has been maintained.

The letter also referred to a request made earlier on June 3, 2024. It said, “This office, through letter No. NC-JCM-2024/8 CPC, requested the government to set up the 8th CPC. It has been over 6 months, but no positive response has been received.”

No reason for delay in forming 8th Pay Commission: NC JCM Mishra pointed out, “The 7th Pay Commission was set up on February 28, 2014, nearly two years before its implementation on January 1, 2016. With only a year left for the next revision, there is no reason for further delay.”

He added that Pay Commissions usually take 2 years to prepare their reports, and the government needs another 3 to 6 months to review and implement the recommendations. He stressed, “Given this timeline, delaying the formation of the 8th Pay Commission cannot be justified.”

The NC JCM has urged the Cabinet Secretary to bring the matter to the attention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman for immediate action.

1.2 crore employees and pensioners waiting for 8th Pay Commission Nearly 1.2 crore central government employees and pensioners are eagerly waiting for the announcement of the 8th Pay Commission. Any discussion or decision between the government and employee representatives draws significant attention.

No plan to set up 8th CPC: Finance Ministry The Union Finance Ministry recently stated that there is no plan to form the 8th Pay Commission. This has caused disappointment among over 1 crore central government employees and pensioners.

In response to a question in the Rajya Sabha, Pankaj Chaudhary, Minister of State for Finance, confirmed that no proposal is currently under consideration for setting up the new pay commission.
