Punjab CM declares holiday for Bhagat death anniversary on March 23

On the death anniversary of Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh, March 23, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann declared a public holiday across the state.

"The holiday will allow Punjabis to pay their respects at Bhagat Singh's ancestral village of Khatkar Kalan," Mann explained.

The Punjab assembly also endorsed a resolution today to erect a statue of Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh and BR Ambedkar.

Notably, on March 16, Bhagwant Mann took his oath as Chief Minister of Punjab in a magnificent event held in Khatkar Kalan, the famed freedom fighter's home hamlet.

Mann had earlier invited the people of the state to his oath-taking ceremony in a video message, urging men to wear 'Basanti (yellow)' turbans and women to wear yellow 'dupatta (stole)' for the occasion.

The colour Basanti represents revolution and the spirit of sacrifice, and it is associated with Bhagat Singh. It also corresponds with the arrival of the Spring season.
