Starting now, the Karnataka government has introduced a new policy granting paternity leave to single male parents. Previously, maternity leave was exclusively available to women, but this has changed to include single fathers as well.
In accordance with a recent order, government employees who are single male parents, including unmarried individuals, divorcees, and widowers, will now be eligible for this leave. The order acknowledged numerous requests advocating for leave entitlements for single men raising children, and the government deemed it a justified demand.
Consequently, single men will now have the opportunity to take six months of paternity leave. However, if they decide to marry while on this leave, their entitlement will automatically cease from the day of their marriage, as specified in the order.
Previously, the government had already recognized adoptive parents on equal footing with biological parents by allowing them to avail themselves of maternity leave as well.
