According to sources, an Army chopper carrying senior defence officers crashed near Coonoor in Tamil Nadu.
According to reports, the crash occurred in the Nilgiris. Some injured people were taken to the hospital.
According to ANI, CDS Gen. Bipin Rawat and some of his family members were on board. An unconfirmed report from local media states that the CDS Bipin Rawat is critical at the hospital.
The chopper was carrying 14 senior defence officials and was flying from Sulur Airbase to Wellington. Three officials have been rescued so far while a search is on for the rest, an official said. The injured have been taken to Wellington cantonment in Nilgiris.
The Indian Air Force confirmed the crash and the presence of CDS Rawat on board in a statement. "An IAF Mi-17V5 helicopter carrying CDS Gen Bipin Rawat crashed today near Coonoor, Tamil Nadu." "An Inquiry has been ordered to determine the cause of the accident," said the IAF.
