No proposal to constitute 8th Central Pay Commission: Govt in Lok Sabha

The central government on Monday confirmed that it has no proposal to constitute the 8th Central Pay Commission for revision of pay and pension of Central Government employees.

In a written reply in Lok Sabha, MoS for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary said that two representations have been received for constitution of 8th Central Pay Commission in June, 2024, but no such proposal is under consideration of the Government, at present.

The government clarification on 8th Pay Commission came after it received a letter from Shiv Gopal Mishra, secretary, Secretary General of the Confederation of Central Govt Employees and Workers, sent a letter to the Cabinet Secretary urging the government to prioritise the formation of the 8th Pay Commission.

The letter called for the restoration of Old Pension Scheme (OPS), release of 18-month dearness allowance and relief which was frozen during the Covid-19 pandemic to employees and pensioners.

With Budget 2024 just around the corner, it was being speculated that the government would announce the formation of the Eighth Pay Commission to revise basic pay, allowances, pension, and other benefits of the central government employees and pensioners.

Former prime minister Manmohan Singh had formed the Seventh Pay Commission on February 28, 2014 and it submitted its report on November 19, 2015. The recommendations of the Commission came into effect on January 1, 2016.

Lakhs of central government employees were anticipating that the government would soon announce the formation of the 8th Pay Commission as going by the past trends the commission  should be implemented from January 1, 2026 as it formed after every 10 years.

The 8th pay commission, if formed, is anticipated to impact government employees as it would ensure increased salaries, and enhancement of allowances, like House Rent Allowance (HRA), Transport Allowance (TA) and Dearness Allowance (DA).
