Women loco pilots fight for lighter jobs during pregnancy

Women assistant locopilots (ALPs) and locopilots (LOPs) are battling against stricter regulations that forbid them from taking "lighter" duties during pregnancy in order to ensure safe birth of the baby.

Out of the 65,000 people employed by the Railways nationwide, 1,350 are women who work as locopilots and assistant locopilots. Women who work in other sectors are given easier tasks when spending time with their families so they don't become exhausted during working hours. We are also seeking the same, not only to achieve parity but also since ours is one of the most difficult positions due to the longer hours and more difficult working environments, according to a senior female locopilot.

Given that they are confined to the cramped cabins of the locomotives from the moment of signing in until signing out, the job is difficult for locopilots of all genders. Engines lack restrooms, in contrast to coaches. We rarely have two minutes to care to our natural needs. And since most express/mail trains barely stop for a minute at stations, it will be like hell to continue working if our stomachs are disturbed, remarked a male locopilot with more than 20 years of experience.
