UP planning anti-corruption agency on the lines of CBI

The Uttar Pradesh government intends to pass legislation that would give the state's criminal investigation unit powers similar to those of the Central Bureau of Investigation.

According to Awanish Awasthi, additional chief secretary, the new law aims to strengthen the state's Special Investigation Team (SIT), which is currently led by a Director-General of Police-level officer. What that means and how the law will ultimately look will be known only after the law, which is still in its early stages, is drafted, officials said.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directed the state's home ministry on Thursday to draught a special law, the UP Special Police Establishment Act, similar to the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act, which governs the CBI.

The SIT in Uttar Pradesh is a multidisciplinary agency that is currently mandated to investigate corruption allegations against "influential people and public servants who misuse their high position or connection and indulge in the commission of serious irregularities and economic offences," according to the agency's website.
