The Government of India addressed concerns regarding the retirement age of government employees in response to Lok Sabha Unstarred Question No. 2999, answered on March 19, 2025. The key points from the response by Dr. Jitendra Singh, Minister of State in the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, and Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office, are as follows:
The government has clarified that there is no proposal under consideration to change the retirement age of government employees at the national level.
There is no existing policy to abolish positions that become vacant due to employee retirements. The government has not implemented any such practice to eliminate posts after an employee retires.
The retirement age of government employees varies between the Central and State Governments, but the central government does not maintain a centralized database on this matter. Since policies related to retirement age fall under the State List, each state determines its own retirement rules.
The government has acknowledged that there is no uniformity in retirement age across different governments. This is primarily because state governments have autonomy in deciding their policies based on their respective administrative and financial considerations.
As of now, no formal proposals have been received from government employee unions or organizations, including the National Council (Joint Consultative Machinery), requesting changes in the retirement age.
In summary, the government has no immediate plans to modify the retirement age or eliminate vacancies created due to retirements. Additionally, the variation in retirement age across different governments continues to exist due to state-specific policies, and no formal demands for changes have been submitted by employee unions.
