SC slams Kerala for life long pension to personal staff of ministers with 2 years tenure

SC slams Kerala for life long pension to personal staff of ministers with 2 years tenure

The Kerala government's pension scheme for ministers' personal staff was criticised by the Supreme Court on Monday. The court questioned why the state is opposing the fuel pricing policy when it can provide pensions to its employees.

"You are the only state where persons are only appointed by Minister for 2 years & give them a life long pension. Please tell your state, if they can do that, why can't they do this?", the Supreme Court orally observed while refusing to entertain a writ petition by Kerala State Road Transport Corporation ("KSRTC") challenging decisions taken by the State-owned Oil Marketing Companies, relating to increase in fuel prices sold to bulk purchasers.

The remark was made in response to KSRTC's objection to charging higher rates for bulk purchases than the market rate. Justice S Abdul Nazeer asked senior counsel V Giri to inform the government of the court's displeasure.

Giri responded that even if he does not deliver the news, it will reach the government through the media. He went on to say that he would do it regardless.

The Supreme Court refused to send notices to the relevant authorities. The plea was withdrawn by KSRTC. The Supreme Court stated that if necessary, it will approach the Kerala High Court.
