8th Pay Commission: Finance Secretary hints at right time

Central government employees and pensioners were left disappointed as Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman did not refer the 8th Pay Commission in the Budget speech. Many had hoped that the budget would bring news of the commission, which is expected to be implemented from January 2026, continuing the tradition of introducing a new pay commission every ten years.

Despite the lack of mention in the budget, Union Finance Secretary T V Somanathan provided a glimmer of hope during a post-Budget interview. Speaking to a TV channel, Somanathan noted that the government might make a decision on the pay commission in the near future. "The next pay commission is due in 2026 and there is still time, as we are currently in 2024," he said.

“8th Pay Commission is due on January 1, 2026. We are currently in 2024. There is time for it,” Somanathan reiterated.

The secretary’s statement has given hope to over 1 crore central government employees and pensioners who have been eagerly awaiting a revision in their salaries and pensions following the implementation of the new pay commission. While the wait continues, Somanathan's remarks suggest that an official decision could be on the horizon, keeping the anticipation alive for many.
